The Wall Of Shame
Before I held my current job, I spent a few years working for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources as a pilot. Through my work, I spent a lot of time with the Wisconsin Game Wardens. In fact, I had the honor of holding Warden credentials myself for a period of time. Over the years I have written many songs about the wardens and their exploits. This particular song was written about the Warden’s “Wall Of Shame”, a display of monster whitetail buck heads that were all taken illegally by poachers. This “Wall” is often displayed at various sport shows throughout the state as well as the state fair. Each “head” has it’s own story that you can read about as you view the wall. It is truly a sobering display.
The Wall Of Shame
Let me sing this song, it’s sad but it’s true, it happens every year too many times
When the actions of a few, reflect upon me and you
And true sportsman pay for all their crimes
Now they’re hanging on that wall, they’ll never see another fall
And it’s too big a price we all must pay
Chorus-
You see they took from you and me, it’s a hunting tragedy
There’s no one left but them to blame
For those big buck’s heads that are hanging on The Wall Of Shame
Number 8 hangs on the right, got killed one October night
By some so called hunters in disguise,
In the headlights with one shot, left him in a field to rot
Cut off his rack and bragged about their prize.
Chorus-
Number 3 he hangs in the middle of the wall
Met his fate in the fall of “94”
When a so called licensed guide, took him down and then he lied
About the facts of how that big buck died.
He was sitting in his stand with a pistol in his hand
When he claimed that kill for archery,
Then he thought he’d got away, till he met the ‘one’s in gray”
When they seized that buck for all to see.
Chorus-
