The Huntin’ Shack
My pride and joy, my huntin shack, inspired this tune. For years I had deer hunted from my home (I live in the country). My wife, not being a deer hunter, failed to “understand” what deer season meant to my friends and I! As a result, she was not at all pleased when my friends would show up at the house at “0 – Dark Thirty” each day to hit the woods in pursuit of the wily whitetail! I told her I would remedy the situation by building my own “shack” on some property I owned a few miles from my house. She, of course, was overjoyed at the prospect! I drew the plans out on a sheet of graph paper, had a logger friend of mine cut down some trees for me, and then I set out to peel every log by hand and build myself an honest to goodness deer hunting shack to hunt from, just like the “good old days”! I had never built anything before in my life, buy I’m happy to say, this shack turned out better than I could ever have expected. We’ve been hunting out of it now for 6 years and life is good (both there and at home!).
The Huntin Shack
Deer huntin’s coming, it’s that time of year, my buddies come over and we’ll drink some beer
My wife don’t like it, she says “get out of here”,
Now I gotta build me a shack.
So I bought an “80” down the road a mile or two, got a hammer and some nails but I ain’t got a clue
Better cut me some logs maybe more than a few,
Cause I’m gonna build me a shack.
Chorus-
Now she sits on a hill overlooking my spread
She’s got a cast iron stove and the roof is red
Well I can’t wait to climb in that old bunk bed
When I’m staying out at the shack.
I can smell the bacon frying on opening day
There’s a pot of coffee brewing, now we’re here to stay,
I just wouldn’t have it any other way, when we’re staying out at the shack
I got country music playing on the radio
There’s an 8 pointer hanging on the old buck pole,
Grab a lantern, make a trip to the old one hole
When you’re staying out at the shack.
Chorus-
You know the floor might be dirty and the dishes aren’t clean
There’s hunting clothes hanging on the wooden beams
But a man’s home’s his castle, now I know what that means
When I’m staying out at the shack
Can’t wait till we get back
Staying out at the hunting shack.
