The Eagle Flies

This was the first song I had ever written. Penned back in 1972, the song was inspired by many trips I had taken previously as a kid, and later a college student, to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area of Northern Minnesota. This was written at a time in my life when I was about to embark on a career in the U. S. Air Force as a pilot. I had my whole life ahead of me at the time, and I pondered what the future might bring to me as I finally went “out into the world” on my own.

The Eagle Flies

As I sit here wondering where I’m going, what will I do with my life,

The virgin timber surrounds me, and the stillness of the lake reflects my face,

Behind me my campfire is slowly burning low.

As I gaze upwards to windswept skies, I see a graceful form glide by me,

Circling over towering spires of forest green, being free never lonely,

A quiet world he has seen.

The eagle flies so high above me:

Now my silver craft will part clear waters, and the loon’s distant cry will be my friend,

As I slowly paddle through the wilderness, I wonder what the future might bring,

The eagle flies so high above me, the eagle flies so high above me:
